20 free ways to advertise your website online for free

20 Free Ways to Advertise Your Web Site

Television ads are often prohibitively expensive for small businesses to produce and air. Magazine and radio ads are less expensive but still require a sizeable investment when part of an ongoing campaign. Although you can spend a lot of money on an Internet campaign, there are many ways to leverage the Internet and gain free advertising for your business. Following are 20 ideas to consider.
  1. Increase your visibility on search engines: Insert keywords that describe your business into the HTML < META > tags on your Web site pages. Repeat these keywords in the text of your Web site’s homepage. Strategic use of keywords can put your business name at the top of customers’ search results. For more information, see our article “Optimizing Your Site for Search Engines and Directories”.
  2. Put your URL on everything: Maximize your advertising efforts by listing your Web site address on everything you do. Print the URL on your company’s letterhead, on your business cards, on the front of your building or the door to your office suite. Use the URL in your e-mail signature. List the URL on any print advertising that you do, including phone books, brochures, flyers, and direct mail pieces.
  3. Submit your site to every directory, specialty listing, industry organization, and yellow pages you can find: No matter what industry your business is in, there are online directories, such as Yahoo! Yellow Pages, that you should register with. Many business and industry associations allow you to list your business on their Web site. In addition, there are individuals who maintain popular lists of resources; use Web search engines to find these lists, and then create an entry for your business.
  4. Utilize evangelists: Channel the energy of your most enthusiastic staff and encourage them to promote your company’s product as they surf the Web.
  5. Blogs: A Weblog, or blog, is a collection of short articles, essays, or loosely-formatted thoughts, usually written by one individual. Since the 2004 U.S. presidential election, blogs have become extremely popular as both a medium to get your message out and a vehicle for paid advertising. Blogs also encourage reader comments, making them a valuable tool for gathering customer feedback. Companies such as Blogger (www.blogger.com) will host your blog for free. You can also install a blog on your own Web site with free software such as MediaWiki (http://wikipedia.sourceforge.net).
  6. Podcasting: Podcasts are audio files recorded in a radio talk show format. By posting podcasts on your Web site and other sites like Apple’s iTunes (www.itunes.com), customers can subscribe to your podcasts, download them as soon as they are available, and then listen to them on their computers or portable MP3 devices. The software to create podcasts is free; for more information visit www.podcastingnews.com.
  7. Join online communities: No matter what the topic, there are thousands of people discussing it passionately on the Internet. By contributing to these discussion groups, you can inform your customers and advertise your business..
  8. E-mail lists: Cultivate a list of your customers’ e-mail addresses and send them new product announcements, coupons, special offers, and useful information. See our article “Introduction to E-Mail Marketing” for more information.
  9. Get the attention of the press: Pitch news ideas about your industry to local newspapers, radio stations, and television stations. Pitch ideas to Web news sites. Propose that one of your employees be the expert interviewed in the news piece.
  10. Win awards: Research organizations that give awards for the products or services you provide. Apply for these awards and take the process seriously. When you win, make the most of the publicity.
  11. Donate time or resources to a charity: Encourage charitable organizations to promote your business’ donations and involvement. Try to get media coverage for the organizations and community causes you champion.
  12. Publish information and reports about your industry: Provide consumers with free information about your business’ industry. Invest in potential customers and they will invest in you.
  13. Reciprocal links: Companies such as LinkLeads (www.linkleads.com) help businesses by facilitating an exchange of hyperlinks. By allowing a company to insert links to their products on your site, a company will allow you to insert links to your products on its site.
  14. Reciprocal banner ads: Companies such as 123Banners (www.123banners.com) help businesses by facilitating free banner advertisement swaps. By allowing a company to advertise on your site, they allow you to advertise on theirs. Be sure you retain control over what Web sites carry your ads, and what ads you post on your site.
  15. Coupons: Make coupons available on your Web site and e-mail them to your customers. Encourage them to give the coupons to friends and family.
  16. Free samples of your product or service: Offer free samples of your product or service. Distribute these samples as widely as possible. Register your giveaways with Web sites such as A+ Free Stuff (www.aplusfreestuff.com) that act as a clearinghouse for free products. Before giving something away for free, ask customers to provide their e-mail address or fill out a short survey.
  17. Free classified ads: Use services like Yahoo! Classifieds (http://classieds.yahoo.com) to post free ads for your products and services. Also consider posting offers for free samples of your products, sweepstakes, and other giveaways.
  18. Excellent customer service: There’s no advertising like personal recommendations made between friends and family. The best way to encourage this type of “viral marketing” is to provide excellent customer service. Take the time to properly train and motivate your sales people and do what is necessary to satisfy your customers’ needs.
  19. Business alliances and partnerships: Build partnerships with businesses that offer complementary products and services, and then promote each other. Make joint press statements about your industry, your partnership, and your products and services. Make sure your partners provide links from their Web sites to yours.
  20. Ezine: Write an e-mail newsletter, called an ezine, with articles about your industry, your products and services, and related news of interest to your customers. Check out sources such as goarticles.com and ezinearticles.com, which provide free articles you can use in your ezine. Advertise your ezine for free with directory sites such as www.ezine-dir.com.
Not all these ideas may be appropriate for your business. The important thing is to think creatively and experiment. The Internet is an extremely flexible tool that gives your business many avenues for advertisement and enables you to react quickly to customer feedback.

How to increase traffic to your blog or website - more traffic, more money

  1. Write more content. If you want to increase site traffic, you’ve got to write content. People will not visit your site if you don’t write a decent amount of good quality content, and new visitors definitely won’t come back. So keep writing great posts!
  2. Have a good design and layout. If your site or blog’s design is messy, sloppy, hard to navigate, a rainbow of colors that don’t match or are hard on the eye, or full of errors, you will instantly go down the drain.
  3. Get your own domain. I promise that if you have your domain, you will get more traffic. You will linked to more and people will more easily remember your URL. Try to get your own domain and have it from the start.
  4. Start using StumbleUpon. I have had a HUGE success with StumbleUpon. When the right article from your blog meets StumbleUpon, expect a lot of people to rate your post a thumbs up, and then even more people “stumbling upon” your blog.
  5. Guest blog. Offer to write a post on someone else’s site. Even better, have the post already written up and then let the blogger know you have a post ready to guest blog on their site, if it’s okay with them. When you write your guest blog post, find a post on your own blog that’s related and link to in your guest blog post. A link for you on their blog, and more ability to increase site traffic.
  6. Begin tagging your images. When you have an image in your post, it should always be tagged properly. Make sure the width and height are clearly defined. But most importantly, fill out the alt and title tags with the image’s keywords.
  7. Respond to your comments and email. People love a blog whose owner is interactive and thoughtful, an owner who gets back quickly with response to their comments and emails. If you can do this, except more loyal readers who will love you. :) Then expect more increased site traffic and more linkage.
  8. Use MyBlogLog. Make sure you have an eye-catching avatar. Then join all the MyBlogLog communities you can (daily limit of 15). In no time your avatar will be all over all the MyBlogLog blog and community pages, and you’ll see more and more visitors coming to you.
  9. Don’t waste your time. Don’t waste your time with crazy “money earners” such as those that pay you to click, pay you to read, pay you to surf, pay you to search, or anything like that. Those aren’t worth anything. Instead, spend your time writing quality content and the increase in site traffic will follow.
  10. Pay attention to your stats. Pay attention to your stats and Google Analytics. See what keywords are getting you the most traffic and what posts your readers like and don’t like. Use this knowledge to keep writing more popular posts filled with great keywords.
  11. Link to other posts. When you link to posts on other blogs, that creates a trackback, or pingback. When you link to another blogger’s post, if they have trackbacks turned on, you will receive a link back as well in the comments section of the post of which you linked.
  12. In your posts, ask your readers questions. Readers like to feel important and a lot of them like to talk. The next time you write a post, ask them a question or their opinion on something. You’ll receive a lot more comments and many of the visitors will be more likely to come back.
  13. Make a lens on Squidoo. On Squidoo, you can make your own lenses, aka, pages, on their site. Make a lens that is relative to your blog or site’s topic, and then be sure to link to your blog on the lens! Did I mention you can also make money on Squidoo? Click here to read more.
  14. Comment on other blogs. When you comment on other blog’s 99.9% of the time there is a box you can write in your own site’s address. Then from there, when people view your comment, they can click through to your blog or website! Comment on as many different blog’s as you can. Maybe even set aside a day of the week for commenting. The more comments you leave, the more you are noticed, and the more traffic you get.
  15. Write list posts. Everybody loves list posts. This post is a list post. Examples are “Top 10 Blog Themes”, “25 Uses for Vinegar”, and “5 Helpful Website Tools”. List posts are usually linked to a lot more and get a lot more traffic than normal posts.
  16. Submit your blog to search engines. Most people get the majority of their traffic from search engines. When people search for your keyword and find your site or blog, there’s more traffic! Click here to submit your blog to be indexed in Google if it hasn’t been already, and remember to keep writing fresh content for the engines to chew on!
  17. Establish relationships with fellow bloggers. Develop relationships with all kinds of bloggers, especially those also in your niche. Comment on their blogs, have conversations, link to them, make friendships. And before you know it, they’ll be linking to you too and maybe sending some traffic your way.
  18. Use traffic exchanges. I’m not quite sure if you can be penalized for using traffic exchanges, but they can bring you loyal readers if your blog is good enough, besides the continuous traffic. See my post on the BlogMad traffic exchange.
  19. Link to your other posts as often as you can. Link internally to posts on your own blog. This helps your rankings and also helps your site traffic increase. If people who come to your your blog have nothing else to see, they will leave. When you link to your other articles, they will most likely choose to go read those as well before leaving, and will stay on your blog longer.
  20. Sign up on Yahoo! Answers. On Yahoo! Answers you are able to answer other people’s questions, help them, and give answers. There is a box where you can write the source of where you got your answer. Answer questions in your field and link to your blog posts as the source!
  21. Sign your blog up on blog top lists. A blog top list is a chart of all the blogs that are in it. The list is numbered and your blog can go higher on the list when it has more traffic, more votes, more incoming visitors, etc. They’re very simple and easy to join. Plus, they can rake in the traffic! Click here to see some top lists you can join and learn more.
  22. Submit to site directories. Some directories list hundreds of sites, some list thousands. The backlinks are great, but the traffic from the directories will be less than a trickle, most likely nothing. However, submit with your site’s name using your keywords, and then you could be ranked more highly on Google for those keywords, which means more traffic!
  23. Don’t use link trains. This does not directly related to traffic but it’s still good advice. I made the mistake of joining in on the ViraLink and ViralTags, and you should never do that! Besides, your readers will appreciate it and they’ll stick around longer. ;)
  24. Reread, edit, and go over your posts. No one wants to link to a post that is poor quality. Even if the post is a brilliant idea, if it’s full of spelling and grammatical errors, it won’t be linked to. And no links means no traffic.
  25. Submit your posts to blog carnivals. Go to the Blog Carnival website and submit as many of your articles to as many carnivals related to your niche as you can. When the carnival edition you submitted to is posted, not only will you have linkbacks, but you’ll have more visits to your blog. If you don’t understand what a blog carnival is, read about it here.
  26. Hold your own blog carnival. I think blog carnivals are very fun to hold. People submit their articles to your carnival. When you publish your carnival, almost all of those people go to the carnival edition to view their link there. And you carnival can also be featured on the Blog Carnival website homepage.
  27. Link exchange with other people in your field. Whether the link exchange is on a sidebar on every page of the site, on one page of the site, or in a post on the site, it’s up to you. But link exchanging with others who have related blogs can be a big help. And when their sites grow, an even bigger help!
  28. Use Feedburner for people to subscribe to your blog. When people subscribe to you via RSS or get your blog updates in email, they’ll see your posts whenever you make a new one. This is vital for keeping people in touch with your blog and getting them to come back.
  29. Use Youtube. Make an account on Youtube, and then on your profile you can list your website address. List your site or blog’s link there. Then start making videos and when people view your profile, some of them might click through to your website!
  30. Ask the bigger blogs for a link.I can’t stress enough that you’ve got to do this right or not at all. You need to be polite and not beg. Start building your conversation with the A-lister and developing the relationship before you ask for anything. Make sure you give to them, link to them in your posts. Before you do anything, read Kumiko’s post on this. I know if I got such a polite email as this instead of a begging spammer, I would have to say yes. And if you do get your link, not only will this help your page rank, but you should get a very decent amount of traffic.
  31. Use Technorati tags. Getting into more categories in Technorati will get you a lot more exposure, which means more traffic. If you don’t know what Technorati tags are, read Court’s post.
  32. Write a post about a celebrity. No matter what your niche is, you can find some way to relate your topic to a celebrity. For example, 6 Lessons Britney Spears Can Teach You About Blogging. People search for celebrities all the time and love the dirt on them. Quadruple your traffic when you right a post about a celebrity right after a big event in the celebrity’s life. For example, the shaving of their head, the birth of their child, their marriage, or their death, to name a few.
  33. Encourage others to Digg your articles. Digg is a site that lets people vote on articles, on whether people like them or not. Your blogger friends will most likely Digg your work for you if you politely ask, or even better, add a Digg button at the bottom of all your posts. Make sure your best articles get Dugg and started in the right direction, and if the post is good enough, it can generate thousands of visitors a day.
  34. Get a plugin for the social bookmarking sites. At the bottom of this post you will see a line of buttons that lets people submit and vote my articles to social bookmarking sites (Digg, Reddit, Netscape, and others included). I’m using the AntiSocial plugin. If you have this plugin implemented you are WAY more likely to be submitted to social bookmarking sites, which in turn means a lot more traffic.
  35. Link to the A-listers. This ties in a little with asking the A-listers for a link, or sort of pushing them in the direction of giving you one, but this is much for subtle and much more nice. The more you link to the A-listers and probloggers in your niche, the more they will probably notice you. Then they might link to one of your posts as well, which could send huge amounts of traffic your way!
  36. Write a pillar post. This is not only a list post, but a pillar post as well. This post is a long, authoritative, instructional post (and has also quickly grown to be this blog’s most popular article). Pillar posts should take a long time, hours, to write. You should link to your pillar posts often in your blog, and make sure they get top exposure. Pillar posts will get linked to and receive decent amounts of traffic.
  37. When a major holiday rolls around, write about it. When Easter, Thanksgiving, Christmas, or another big holiday comes, make a post about it a month beforehand. Give yourself time to be indexed and linked to. When the holiday comes, it will be searched for a lot and your site could be found!
  38. Use smart URLs on Wordpress. If you’re using Wordpress and are using their messy URLs, you’d better get this plugin to switch to the URLs that include the date and post name in the link. Using that plugin will not make you lose your search engine stats or anything, it is a redirect.
  39. Make your readers feel at home. If you are rude, never give back, don’t answer your comments or emails, don’t help other bloggers, or are always uptight and don’t make your readers feel at home, chances are they might stop visiting your blog. When you make your readers feel at home, you get more traffic.
  40. Be a human, not a robot. If in all your posts you sound extremely business-like, never mention yourself, only talk about the same thing all the time, or are 100% perfect, it could actually send people away. I’m not telling you to be sloppy, talk about yourself all the time, stray from your topic, or make a lot of mistakes. But let your readers know you’re like them too and that you have some things in common. Don’t make your site be boring.
  41. Take the ads off your site. To increase your traffic remove your ads. When you have no way of making money on your website, you seem a lot more serious and devoted. Most likely you will get more traffic and loyal readers. And then maybe in the future, you can ad the ads again to start making some money!
  42. Start your own blog directory. This is something I tried once but failed at miserably. However, I’m sure if I tried again I could do it right, and you could too! When you make your directory at first, make all the links completely free and just have a link submit form where the submissions are emailed to you. You can do a weekly/daily roundup of all the links sent to you, or you can assign the links to their proper categories. When your site gets even bigger, you can ask for a reciprocal link. Then have a “featured site” table, and link to your main website in it. I’m not sure how this would work for everyone but it’s worth a shot.
  43. Post about A-listers in your field. For me this would be people like Darren Rowse and John Chow. You can write about them as a person or a blogger or you can write about how they’re running and doing things. You can post your thoughts on something they’ve said or extend on one of their posts and then leave a comment saying you’ve done so.
  44. Interview other bloggers. This is something I’ve wanted to do for a long time but never got around to. Interviews of other bloggers usually generate a few links, including a link from the blogger you interviewed. And links mean traffic!
  45. Write link love posts. I try to write link love posts every couple of weeks where it is just one big post linking to articles in the blogosphere or on the web that I like, mostly ones related to my niche. Not only does this get you trackbacks, but it also gives you the higher chance of getting linked to in return, which then means traffic.
  46. Have a contest or giveaway! This is a great idea. Hold a contest or a giveaway for a very awesome prize, and people will flock to your site in hopes of winning it. If you give away something really cool, the news will spread like wildfire. Beforehand though, make sure your blog is already receiving a fairly decent amount of traffic with some loyal readers.
  47. Pretend to sell your blog. This is something you can do to get traffic but I do NOT recommend it. This idea has sprung up lately but in my opinion it’s not a good one. You can pay forty dollars to list your blog in a marketplace, and get a huge spike of traffic from potential buyers. Then, you take down the offer and keep your blog. NONE of that traffic will ever come back. It’s not targeted and it is a waste of money. But if you want to get traffic this way, go for it.
  48. Be a comedian. Make people laugh. For a lot of you out there, this shouldn’t be hard. When you make people laugh they will feel a connection to your site or blog and want to tell others and come back.
  49. Help bloggers that need you. If a beginner, newbie blogger leaves you a comment or email that is at least polite, don’t brush them off because of their lack of experience. Help them! You never know, they could become big one day and remember your kindness and assistance.
  50. Have polls on your blog. If you’re using Wordpress, get the Wordpress polls plugin. People like voting in polls and like seeing what the outcome of a poll was. Polls are popular, and popular means traffic.
  51. Start more blogs. Think you can handle it? They can be free blogs, or they can have their own domain. Whatever you want. Work on traffic for all of your blogs, and then have all your blogs link to each other (especially the smaller blogs linking to your main one). Then whoever reads one of your blogs can also be introduced to the other ones.
  52. Create or hack a Wordpress plugin. Okay, this one might be for the smart computer geeks out there, because I couldn’t do it. But if you can, then expect to get lots of links and traffic from all over the place from all the people that use your plugin.
  53. Create a blog theme (Wordpress, Blogspot, whatever). Same goes as for creating a plugin. I could probably do this one more easily than I could make a plugin, though. If you think you can, give it a shot! The traffic will pour in, as will the links.
  54. Make graphics that are useful to others. If you make some free graphics people can use on their website or blog, you’ll get more traffic from this as well, and it’s not nearly as hard. If you’re a professional at making graphics, even try charging a little bit to get money on top of it!
  55. Make graphics for social networking sites as well. People who use Myspace, Facebook, and all those types of sites love using graphics. Colorful banners. Animated, blinking images. If you can make awesome things like that, then they’ll use it. It’s worth a shot for some traffic and links.
  56. Make a Myspace and get a lot of friends. Make a Myspace and work on getting a lot of friends. This doesn’t mean adding the bands or celebrities that automatically accept you. This means the real people. Just go around adding people. Go to “Browse” and add people. Once you have hundreds of friends, link to your site or blog in bulletins and on your profile and everywhere you can. It could draw in some traffic if you do it correctly.
  57. Answer questions you get through comments or email in a post. If someone comments or emails you with a question, and you could give them a very long, drawn out answer, write a post instead. You won’t be wasting your time and then to answer that person, just give them a link to the post you’ve written!
  58. Work on search engine optimization. The better you rank and do in the search engines, the more visitors they will send you. Do your research and homework on search engine optimization and get started right away!
  59. Start an awards series. Spend some time making a little trophy or banner for an award. Make sure your award has a theme and a name, for example, “The Kind Blogger Award”. Then link to five kind bloggers. In the rules, get each of them to link and pass the award to five more bloggers that they think are kind. Many will link back to you as the creator of this award series and you will receive traffic for it.
  60. Buy ads using Google Adwords. Something I haven’t done but might prove very helpful if you’ve got the money. Sign up for Google Adwords and buy advertising. People will click on ads and get to your site. Some could become loyal readers but many will not. A good way of getting traffic.
  61. Order reviews through ReviewMe. If you order reviews on other blogs using ReviewMe or even PayPerPost, you can create a buzz on your site or blog. Reviews are probably the best form of advertising and the best way to get more loyal visitors.
  62. Use ReviewBack to get reviewed for free. Most likely your free reviews will be on small blogs, and you also have to return the favor, but you could still get some nice traffic from it. Something to consider. Check out ReviewBack.
  63. Write a press release. Click here to read how and what to do.
  64. Get on the most favorited list on Technorati. The Technorati top 100 favorited list can be viewed here. It will be very hard to get on to and require a few hundred favorites (a few thousand if you want to be at the top of the list). But you will surely get a lot of traffic if you make it on this list.
  65. Join forums and message boards. Join forums and message boards related to niche. If it is permitted, link to your site or blog when/where you can. Other people on the forum are very likely to check out your site.
  66. Add your link to your forum signature. Another idea, but also only if this one is permitted. Add your site or blog’s link to your forum signature and get active in the community. The link will show up under all of your posts. You can get a nice little amount of traffic if the forum has a lot of members.
  67. Write catchy post titles with keywords. First of all, posts with catchy titles receive more traffic than those with bland, unoriginal titles. Secondly, add some keywords to your catchy titles! You will get ranked better in the search engines. Also, when people link to your post with its keywords, you’ll get ranked even better, with even more traffic from Google, Yahoo, etc.
  68. Use images in your posts. This is something I need to work on more. Use images in your posts. When a post is full of just text, it can get boring. However, (and this depends on your niche), I would recommend using only one image. You don’t want to get too cluttered.
  69. Write a review. If you write a really good honest review of a new product or brand, it could get a lot of attention from people who are interested in purchasing the product.
  70. On high traffic days, write more great quality posts. Let’s say you’ve just written a linkbait (on purpose or by accident) that hit the front page of Digg or did awesome StumbleUpon. That same day and the next couple of days, post more great content. Let the people who’ve came across your site know they should stick around because of your quality content. Keep the traffic going!
  71. Post about important events in your niche. If something important is going to happen in your niche, post about it a couple months, one month, or a few weeks before it happens. Give yourself time to be linked to and indexed by the search engines for that post. When the event rolls around, you will get a lot of traffic if you played your cards right!
  72. Share one of your secrets. Whether it be a huge secret about your success or a personal secret about your life, nobody can resist.
  73. Do something unique. Build a brand and do something original that no one else has done. You will receive a lot of links and traffic for it and the name will stick around for a long time, if not forever. Come up with a new concept that no one else has done before.
  74. Keep improving your blog. People will keep coming back to a blog or site that is constantly worked on and improved. Set aside daily time to plow down and tweak your blog. Also try to write that daily content.
  75. Be yourself. The internet is a great place to be anonymous, but if you are, no one will feel a connection to you and want to keep visiting your blog. Just be yourself, don’t pretend to be someone you’re not, and people will love you for it. I promise.

The best strategies to develop loyalty in your brand, increase conversions and dramatically grow a community of ACTIVE followers

So maybe you’ve begun developing a small but growing community of interested online “fans”.  Hopefully you’re building your dedicated community of fans by being a “trust agent” (Chris Brogan), delivering value and dedicating yourself to “being remarkable” (Seth Godin).
But, once you’ve begun to develop this “fan community” what are the best strategies to increase loyalty, keep them active & create conversions?
The marketing guru’s who’ve built hundreds of thousands of people on their “fan lists” for years would say “market them hard!”.  Yet you know internally that you shouldn’t be spamming them relentlessly (because you know how it feels to be pitched multiple times a day) with an attractive, shiny headline “spinner bait” being trolled along the top of the email marketing water to lure you into clicking & buying their stuff.
Online marketing has changed dramatically in the 5-10 yrs since many of those “experts” became successful and accumulated their lists.  The average online navigator is far less naive, there is far more competition to delineate yourself from and thus their methods are terribly outdated.  But they already have their huge community to do their “email telemarketing” so what do they care.
In today’s marketing climate with so many options out there, the average internet prospect is both “jaded” from being burned & far more intelligent.  Trust me, you don’t want to immediately think “I want to monetize my community & cash in!” as a main focus.
You attracted them because of value, now I propose to you that you bring them closer as a result of…. well, even greater value! Give them what they want and you don’t have to try and “Mass Control” anyone. (yes, I know, I do like Frank but never liked the product name).
I want to give you 10 things that you can do to grow your community, increase long-term sales and avoid causing them to get the “bait & switch” sickness (ie. you got me to follow because I believed you brought value and now you deluge me with marketing crap).  That “virus” is the most powerful cause for community inactivity, complacency and number shrinkage.
Here are the Top 10 ways to develop loyalty in your brand, increase conversions and grow you’re community of “active” followers long term:
  1. Provide Personalized Engagement & Acknowledgment Without Hard Selling! (This is #1 for a reason) It’s not social media MARKETING; it’s SOCIAL media marketing.  They aren’t numbers, prospects or represent future sales.  They are people who want to be engaged with, by YOU in some form that enriches their day. The individual, no matter how “influential” (or not), deserves to be respected as a human being with value (apart from what you feel they may represent to your bank account).  Although I personally auto-tweet helpful content I also interact all the time.  Any mentions, retweets etc.  I always personally send a thank you, check in and see how people are doing, how’s their marketing efforts are going, how’s their family etc. without ever even thinking of asking for business.  This is true on Facebook, site comments etc. This is a theme you’ll see in this list but work to be seen as an ASSET! If you do that, good things ALWAYS happen with your business!
  2. Be A Connector Of The Like Minded  & The Center Of The Win-Win Scenarios. Evangelists are fueled by meeting other believers. If you connect them with each other, the value of your network grows. There’s actually a mathematical formula that backs this up. It’s called Reed’s Law. As  Chris Brogan states “work to be at the elbow of every deal you can… be a connector”
  3. Understand Their CORE Motivation. They aren’t connecting to you because of what you do. As Simon Sinek brilliantly put it, “people don’t buy what you do, people buy why you do it.” And she’s 100% correct.  It’s not enough to do the right thing; you want to convince those you are attracting that you are doing it for the right reasons, for their best interest.  In today’s online marketing climate this has NEVER been more vital! Figure that out and you’ll be able to give them more of what they want.  In order to do that you need to have profiled who you’re the target market is that you are pursuing, what’s deeply important to them and what their key motivators are (see told you I like Kern).
  4. Offer Frequent Opportunities To Participate. Don’t just offer simple contests; offer involvement.  Trust me; it’s the difference between watching the movie “Top Gun” and sitting in the cockpit of an F-18.  Nothing creates more trusting loyalty than active participatory opportunities.  TMZ.com does a great job with this at the bottom of most of their posts they offer a applicable poll question as well as a compelling comment question.  Drudge Retort does a great job of this as well.  It’s the reason they garner thousands of comments per post!
  5. Keep Your Participation Uniquely Relevant To Them. You don’t want to pull a topic “180” that undermines your credibility. If you’re at my house and I’m talking about landscaping, you wouldn’t blurt out “Hey, when will you finally buy my freakin stuff?” Your social point of contact is “your house” – be kind to your guests.  If it appears you are doing one only to get the other then your reputation is already compromised.  Yes you are here to make money but there is a science… a method to the online marketing madness using social media. You’ve got to understand that your relevant helpful content alone cements your reputation and is in itself “marketing”.
  6. Be A Quality Content Aggregator. As you’ve heard me quote him before,Clay Shirky said, “It’s not information overload, it’s filter failure.” Be the filter for your community about what’s relevant to them and they won’t have to go other places.
  7. Offer Social Proof Whenever Possible. Comments, participation & positive reviews do something else, they sell! Robert Cialdini in his book “Influence” tells us how much we value the opinions of others and that we subconsciously look for clues in the behaviors of those we identify with as to what we should do. Let your community know what others just like them find valuable.  Complimenting yourself makes you an egomaniac, the compliments of others makes you celebrity-like.
  8. Prioritize Providing A Unique Experience. Create an experience that brings with it positive emotions. When you give your community access to unique and valuable information, interact in a way that makes them feel special etc, it builds loyalty, motivates word of mouth and more marketing then you could personally do from a mountain top.
  9. Make What You Provide Usable. You want to create something that is memorable and reminds them of your value even when they are not in contact with your site or material.  The easiest way to accomplish this is to provide something that is easy to implement and use. Making them say “wow that was cool” is one thing.  Making them say “Wow that’s amazing and I know exactly where I can use that” is essential to being a trust agent and being seen as an invaluable asset.
  10. Seek Opportunities To Provide Value With “No Strings Attached.” The level of value you provide in your blog/site, the quality of your social media interaction and your free give away content need to be able stand on their own.  Give some of your best stuff away (some not all).  Why? Tim Sanders has written a great book called “Love is the Killer App,” and he is 100% right on the money. Think about it; which creates the better feeling ? “I’ll give you A, if you do B for me” or “here’s A … just because I think you’re cool?”
Don’t be naive; we are ALL working to build an affiliate network.  We’re building an army of people who will point to your site and tell others how great of a person you are, how great of an asset you are and how you’re THEIR friend.  They will say it with pride “man you’ve got to go over the a site called TheBizcoachBlog.com.  Patrick has got years of great content there and his training seriously rocks (yes shameless plug as an example Lol!).  Don’t you want thousands of people to say that with pride and boast about you and what you have to offer?
If you’re about herding traffic like sheep into pens that lead to a conversion then you’re taking your instructions from the so called “guru” examples that you yourself hate & killing your brand reputation in the process.  Work to be seen as an invaluable asset to people and they will point people to you from their network that your valuable content & interactions will convert thus creating a momentous wave.
Brand evangelism truly needs to be the focus of your online marketing social traffic generation.  Once you get that, it might take a little bit to turn the battleship but trust me…. It WILL turn and create more business then you can imagine.  It’s what I preach, teach and see proven every day.

How To Measure & Optimize Your Social Media Strategy To Get Results

Everyone (including clients) want a quantifiable ROI for their social media strategy that revolves around a dollar sign within a relatively short amount of time.
True data on social media return is usually in a longer cycle then the typical “cause & effect” data capture. What I mean is that you can’t measure results in brand perception, over-all marketing efficiency and positive name recognition in a formula of a week or even month long cause and effect formula.
My belief is that it is more accurate to emphasize measuring data that is based on your strategy effectiveness that lead to revenue rather than just the end result of just revenue itself.  That is, focus entirely on what you’re trying to accomplish with your social media program or campaign and then identify the Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) that will tell you over time, whether you’re making progress to your ultimate goal.
What Really Goes Into The 3 Main Measurables
While small businesses and new companies to the social media arena are tempted to over analyze their short term social media ROI, they really need to focus on identifying KPIs that will provide the road-map to business objectives your aiming for.
There are basically 3 kinds of applied measurables that you should be focusing on:
  1. You brand perception: It’s why Visa sponsors the Olympics and why Coca-Cola sponsors the Special Olympics,. It’s why you’re on Twitter. It’s about maintaining or enhancing your brand’s reputation, perception and visibility. So your impacting KPIs that inform factors like customer satisfaction score or likeliness to buy.
  2. You  marketing efficiency: You should be looking at your website, optimize for SEO and study where your traffic is coming from: Twitter, Facebook, blogs. (Twitter, btw, now drives more than 10 percent of the New York Times’ traffic. Facebook drives at least 13 percent of MSN’s and Yahoo’s traffic.) Study your analytics. I strongly recommend having a web analytics tracking system on your website. It’s all about reach. And that means you may need to track the little ticky-tacky metrics that add up to painting a fuller picture.  Some of those niche sources you will find can be responsible for more conversions than you think because of the targeting rather than pure numbers.
  3. Long-Term Revenue growth: It’s about leads, lead qualification and the niche markets they’re coming from that lead to sales revenue.  So hone your marketing program to identify the people who will ultimately generate sales.  Measure downloads, registrations, new subscribers, optins etc and a host of other indicators that will shine a light onto revenue growth patterns.
Again, the performance indicators need to be the real areas of focus.  If you continue to push toward improving those, the increase in long-term revenue will follow.  It all tells a story so measure each area and tweak accordingly.  This is one of the largest opportunities for success and refusing to do so has been shown to be a key culprit for social media marketing failure.  You have to research, start with what you know then analyze and continually optimize in order to truly be successful in the long term.

How to increase twitter online business

Connecting through Twitter can be a difficult as your followers grow and you attempt to wade through all the auto tweet noise. I’ve provided a list of the top 4 Twitter-app directories and the top 10 Twitter follow directories that will help you explode your followers and truly get connected with those that are participating and providing value.
Personally I combine these resources with my TweetAdder professional twitter marketing tool that allows you to easily manage and grow multiple Twitter accounts.
Using a combination of several of these resources will boost your followers, your interactions, your link clicks and  allow you to break your followers into sub-groups to easily manage and truly network on Twitter.

The Top 4 Twitter App Directories

Searching for people or applications on Twitter? Good luck with that. Since Twitter offers little in the way of people search features (though they now have an improved suggestion tool), your search for interesting and dynamic people to follow and applications to use could be a giant waste of your time.
Thankfully there are more than a few third-party resources that you can turn to for finding new people to follow, and new tools to help you do what Twitter won’t let you. We’ll shed a little light on these 15 directories by separating them into four categories: applications, people, politics, and strictly business.

1. Twitter Fan Wiki

The apps section of Twitter Fan Wiki is like Wikipedia for, so it’s for users, by users model, making it the most robust in terms of applications listed, but potentially the most unreliable if entries aren’t current. Applications are broken down into three categories: desktop apps, web apps, and mobile apps. And with subcategories under each heading, Twitter Fan Wiki makes it easy to drill down to just the apps you want to research.
There are lots and lots of applications, so you’re bound to happen upon something new and cool that you didn’t even know existed.

2. Twitdom

Twitdom, which launched with 50+ apps and now houses more than 300, uses WordPress as a platform to display information on Twitter applications and let users navigate category types via tabs to find desktop, mobile, or web apps, browser plugins, and mashups.
Application profiles. Each application has a short profile that also lists related applications. Users can also comment on or rate the applications. And even though it’s easy to miss, users can view the highest rated applications across the site by clicking the Popular link at the top of the site.

3. Twtbase

Similar to Twitdom, Twtbase also houses their database of applications within WordPress and divides them up into either the web, mobile, desktop, or browser plug-in buckets.
The thumbnail view. Each application has a screenshot, displays current rating, and number of votes. Twtbase also has a Site of the Day page that features one app per day.

4. Twapps

In the same vein as Twtbase, Twapps highlights each app with a thumbnail image and comment content on the home page. Users can navigate category tabs to search for desktop apps, Firefox plugins, mobile, and web apps.
Look and feel. The site is easy on the eyes, and since there’s only about 90 apps listed you won’t get overwhelmed by selection.

Top 10 Twitter Follow Directories & Tools

Twitter directories are a useful way to find new followers. These directories are all different ways of associating people with similar interests or geography. Here is a list of some of the top Twitter Directories .

1. WeFollow

Twellow is a great new search tool and directory for discovering Twitter users. Twellow was launched by producers of WebProNews.

It then analyzes and categorizes each of the users responsible for those messages into the various categories found at Twellow.com. By adding these people to specific categories we help you narrow your searching into specific niches where you can find who you are looking for.
Use the Get Listed form to request the user information from Twitter and have it added to Twellow.

One of my personal favorites.  Twibes organizes Twitter conversations by topic which makes it a whole lot easier for you to find them, stay up to date, and participate.
A lot of people set up a Twitter account… and then what? With Twibes, you can search on a keyword or browse their categories and find Twitter people who are interested in the same things that you are.
Even if you are active on Twitter, there can be lots of random conversations that are hard to follow. Twibes makes it easy to participate in Twitter conversations you care about, which is made even easier with their threading feature. This allows you to follow all replies to a tweet from start to finish, without having a bunch of other tweets in the way.
It basically allows you to create sub-groups you can then inneract with by topic and based on what their interests are.  This is a great tool for Internet marketers!

The semi-controversial TwitterPacks is a wiki style directory originally started by Chris Brogan about a year ago, had some issues then regrouped and got its act together.
People are organized in packs by topic, interest, location, company, and events. Now that the dust has settled, TwitterPacks could be just the thing you need to find great people to follow on Twitter.
Grouped in unique “packs” the category types are endless, with the Interest packs including everyone from fitness buffs to gardening gurus, so it’s the perfect place for hobbyists and serious marketers to add themselves or connect with like minded individuals. Whenever you click a tag, you’re given a listing of people who have mentioned it in recent tweets.
You can follow them @Tweetertags

Tips to enhance your online business

Above the strategies and techniques that I teach, any time I am working with an online marketer, it doesn’t matter what business (self-branding information marketing, network marketing, affiliate marketing, monetized blogging etc) the daily foundational focus of their business needs to be built on the following 4 pillars.
1)      No matter what happens; stick with it! The only way not to succeed is to give up.
Remind yourself everyday of the reasons you first began your pursuit. I personally know myriads of people who became successful just a few months after seriously being tempted to quit and give up.
Become convinced that you’re practically guaranteed to reach your goals if you don’t give up. You might make changes to your business, your offering, your marketing strategy etc but that’s part of the process.  Sticking with it for the long haul will get you there!
2)      Commitment to daily self development
The temptation is to totally bypass this as it is seen as a “non-revenue generating” function but don’t fall into that trap.  You’re business is your decision to invest your effort into something that can dramatically impact your life.
Daily time taken for self development is a crucial step to remain grounded, to grow and it is an investment into developing the “source” of that effort.  More people quit when faced with challenges as they start out because they negate self-development.
3)      Scheduling short-term objectives in the evening for the following day
You have big dreams, long-term aspirations and goals.  You might even have short term goals as well.  Having said that, if you don’t have short term objectives created so that when you wake up in the morning you have things to start to run and do then you’re hamstrung right out of the gate that day.  If you want to be successful in this business, you have to run it like a business not a hobby!
Get your list, mark it off and feel a great sense of accomplishment when you do! In the initial building process, for many it can feel overwhelming as you set up the mechanism that will generate your income stream.  You need to feel excited when you complete the tasks for that day that brought you steps closer to making that your reality.
4)      Be an unashamed, undeterred, sold out, balls-to-the-wall evangelist for your business, your offering and your brand!
I’ve discussed how to market without pissing people off and there are definitely some rules of etiquette to follow when doing so but understand this; your commitment to the passionate promotion of your offering, your brand and what your business stands for is paramount to your success.  Know that you are going to piss people off regardless in fact, if you aren’t annoying anyone then you’re probably way too passive.
Having said that, if you are growing any online business to generate revenue you need to have a balls to the wall attitude however there is a common pitfall among most energetic and passionate marketers.  Many will try to shove their offer down everyone’s throat and when they don’t respond positively, dismiss and write them off, leaving the person with a bad taste in their mouth.  The problem is that because they don’t ask questions and listen to learn needs, they piss off two other groups; potential marketing partners as well as the future prospects that would convert.
Instead, market your personal brand, your business and your offering by energetically and passionately appealing to:
  1. prospects that have needs your business or offering can satisfy now
  2. when someone is “not interested” you make sure you don’t burn bridges to future sales
  3. while also searching out marketing & advertising partnerships….
Because you need to appeal to all three!  Otherwise, along with alienating the other 2/3rds of your market you’ll be killing your branding and reputation.

How to increase website traffic

You can comment on blogs to get more traffic. Leave a worthy comment on a famous blog that is related to your very own. Make sure the comment is keyword rich. A keyword rich comment will attract attention. This method will give you a high chance of driving traffic to your own website.

Use Google to find blogs or websites related to your own. Also type in keywords related to your blog on article sites such as ezinearticles. You can find articles along with links to other websites that people in your niche are trying to promote. This is another way of finding websites in your niche.

Make sure you find blogs that have quality content and high traffic. The more traffic coming to the blog, the more chance you have to drive it to your own website. Try and find a website that isn’t stuffed with comments. Otherwise, it will be hard for your link to get noticed.

A good idea to get attention is to ask questions. Take some time to think of thought provoking questions. Anything that will get some conversation going. Do what it takes to grab people’s attention! Lure people to interact and you can lead some to your link.

If you use keyword rich comments, the blog owners will love it. The more keyword rich blog content, the better SEO. Web crawlers will take notice of this! So there is a benefit for the blog owner too!

Cheers to you, and happy commenting!
