Reading Facial Expressions—Things You Need to Know

By now, you should have already known that non verbal communication comprises a big part of human interaction. Messages conveyed by a person need not necessarily be spoken because the way the body moves can communicate those meanings.
One aspect of non verbal communication is facial expressions. Just like how you can send someone a message through your arm gestures, you can also say a lot by the way your face muscles move.
It is very easy to learn how to read facial expressions of people. You can easily become skilled in deciphering what a certain individual is thinking based on the way they look. This is going to be a very valuable skill during face-to-face interactions because you will be able to determine how you are going to respond properly to a person you’re talking to.
This can become very handy especially when trying to date someone. If you like a person and can’t tell if he or she feels the same way about you and you don’t want to look like a fool trying to maintain the conversation when the other person doesn’t really want to talk to you, you can look at his (or her) facial expressions.
Based on how their face contorts, their eyebrows meet, and their lips move, you will be able to gauge if that person is interested in talking to you or not.
Reading facial expressions and deciphering their meanings
When talking to a person with a tight expression on the eyes, it could mean discomfort. That person may not like talking to you, hence the tight eye expression. This is usually a good indicator of distress.
Indirect eye contact can mean a person is not telling you the entire truth. Their desire to hide something from you is manifested in a stare that they can’t hold. Similarly, a very intense and strong gaze could be a sign of deception.
Studying facial expressions will require you to pay enough attention to eye contact.
When it comes to reading facial expressions, it is crucial to know that while it can be difficult, you will need to practice it in a social situation because there are instances where a certain eye movement or facial expression can mean an entirely different thing.
You should not judge someone based on their facial expression immediately. You’d have to take into consideration the setting and other factors. You need to be instinctive too. It takes practice and the right combination of instinct and careful analysis to learn how to read facial expressions accurately.
Facial expressions can vary from people to people. Some are more subtle than others. You should also note that not all people respond the same way when it comes to non verbal communication. At times, interpreting facial expressions can be relative.
When it comes to reading facial expressions, it’s safe to say that the eyes say a lot more when compared to other parts like the nose and lips. Emotions are far more expressed effectively through the eyes. This is the reason they’re called the windows to the soul.
